Research Areas

Graduate students play a crucial role in our research program. They work on campus (including at the Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, or IAMM), at nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory, or places like Jefferson Lab, CERN, and Fermilab. With approval from the department, graduate students may work with an Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientist as an advisor.

Application Basics

Admissions and Financial Aid

  • Submission of GRE Physics and GRE General scores is optional; absence of these scores does not impact evaluation
  • See departmental policies on financial aid, fee waivers, fellowships, etc.
  • Admission requirements from the University of Tennessee Graduate School, including English Language Certification*
  • All financial support is contingent on adequate progress; the department typically supports eligible students for two years as a teaching assistant followed by 3-5 years as a research assistant

The department cannot evaluate an incomplete application package. It is the responsibility of the student to check their application status.

Timeline

  • November 10: Deadline for requesting a fee waiver. Please note that requests for fee waivers are separate from the application process and receipt of a fee waiver is not a guarantee of admission. Fee waiver request form.  
  • December 15: For full consideration, apply by this date. 
  • Mid-March: Notification of acceptance.
  • April 15: Deadline for decisions from admitted students.
