Internships and Research Opportunities for Undergraduates
UT Physics Summer Fellowships
The physics department offers financial support for students in the form of fellowships and part-time employment. The program is designed to give outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to gain experience in physics research. Students learn research procedures and techniques while exchanging ideas and experiences with other program participants, graduate students, and physics faculty. Each research fellow spends 10 weeks working on a full-time research project supervised by a physics faculty member.
The Nuclear Physics in Eastern TN (NPET) Fellowship
The Nuclear Physics in Eastern TN (NPET) Fellowship is an undergraduate internship program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NPET Fellows will participate in a virtual 15-hour/week commitment during the academic school year followed by an in-person, full-time, 10-week summer program, and will be provided learning opportunities in nuclear physics.
UT Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships
Resources for undergraduates including information sessions on how to get started in research, conferences and events, highlights and features, and information on Pursuit, the university’s undergraduate research journal.
UT Research Foundation
The UTRF internship program is a hands-on opportunity to explore new innovations being developed at UT and to understand the transition from research to a commercial product. Our interns work closely with UTRF’s licensing staff to provide support for innovation assessments while obtaining valuable experience in preparation for careers that merge science with business development, entrepreneurship, and law.
Tennessee Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (TLSAMP)
The goal of the Tennessee Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (TLSAMP) program is to increase the enrollment and graduation rate of underrepresented students (Hispanic, African-American, American-Indian, Alaskan Native, and Pacific Islander) in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by at least 100% at the end of the five-year period.

National Science Foundation: Research Experiences for Undergraduates
NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.
Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.
Department of Energy Scholars Program
The DOE Scholars Program provides opportunities designed to introduce DOE missions, functions, and operations to talented undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates. These opportunities will help prepare Scholars towards the full range of entry and mid-level research, technical and professional positions within DOE and other organizations that support the DOE mission.
Undergraduate Student Opportunities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
ORNL undergraduate research opportunities address ORNL’s scientific mission: materials, neutron sciences, energy, high-performance computing, systems biology, and national security. All internships come with a stipend.
ORISE STEM Internships and Fellowships
ORISE connects the most talented and diverse college students, recent graduates, postdocs, and faculty to STEM internship and fellowship programs closely aligned with the interests of a variety of research facilities, including those managed for the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies.
Society of Physics Students Internships
Through the SPS summer internship program, physics undergraduates are placed in organizations that utilize their knowledge, experience and energy to advance meaningful assignments relevant to the organization and the advancement of physics more generally. Participating organizations assign one or more mentors from their senior staff to guide each intern’s work and overall experience.
